U14s – Derby vs Chesterfield
With Derby struggling with pitch space due to the recent bad weather, Chesterfield kindly offered to host the under 14s. What a wonderful day for Rugby, blue sky and mild conditions met with 40+ lads set the scene.
With 2 full squads, It was decided to play 4 Qtrs. –allowing both Derby and Chesterfield plenty of time for tactics, replacements, and in-game coaching.
Derby started well, getting the benefit of some early rips and gathering of loose/dropped balls which brought some early tries and conversions. Chesterfield undeterred, dug deep but narrowly missed out on a few tries due to a disciplined defence from Derby. Derby managed some more trys and Chesterfield eventually countered with a strong individual run down the wing but was too little too late.
Rugby was the winner today. Both teams managed to field lots of players, some who have just started this season and others their first-ever Rugby game! – the game was skilfully refereed by Chesterfield allowing play to flow, safely, with opportunities for coaching within to the benefit of both groups of lads.
Luka Bussell captained the team, with Thomas Bull leading the backs, Tom Jenkins keeping the discipline with the forwards. Thomas Bull and Tom Craig took conversion kicks. Special mention to Billy Brewin and Alfie Bull. Alfie a recent player to the squad, developing his craft, many may have missed it, due to his pace! – patiently waiting on the wing he made a long individual run resulting in a try under the posts, and Billy, who played his first game of Rugby. A brave strong performance making some strong try-saving tackles for the team and going over the line himself. Well done Billy, Alfie, and the wider team for supporting.
