Mixed ability rugby (Bucks) at derby rugby club

The Derby Bucks are the club’s ‘Mixed Ability’ team, aimed at providing social senior rugby for men aged 17+. Founded in 2018, the team have grown from an initial 3 players to a squad of 30+ for the 2022/23 season. A culture of inclusivity is at the heart of the team and this is reflected by a squad containing both disabled and non-disabled players, all playing contact rugby together against local social sides and other Mixed Ability teams. The vast majority of non-disabled players are individuals who have either never played before or have taken a break from the game following school/ junior rugby.

Fixtures are scheduled monthly and can be viewed here whilst training is weekly on Friday nights from 6:15pm – 7:30pm.

As the only Mixed Ability team in the East Midlands, the Bucks are proud to have won Derby City Sport’s Forum ‘Team of the Year’ in 2019 and to have attended the International Mixed Ability Rugby Tournament in Cork in 2022. The Bucks are looking to build this season, working with other clubs in the region to spread the Mixed Ability model whilst also increasing the size of the squad at Derby.

The Bucks are always open to working with other likeminded teams, charities and organisations to increase both the inclusivity and diversity of the team and Derby RFC. If you would like to get involved as a player, coach or volunteer please contact Team Manager Mike Hawkes.
