It was a double header on a hot sunny day at Derby Rugby Club as Derby Women’s Barbarians and Mansfield took on the established England Deaf sides. Their speed and skills made it festival rugby which was enjoyed by the all of the spectators.
Derby ladies decided to make a big effort in honour of the occasion by inviting players from Darlington, Lincoln, Lichfield and Old Leamingtonians. All jumped at the opportunity to play against an England side.
With all players participating at some stage, it proved a very competitive game, but the teamwork of the visitors gave them the edge over the Barbarians. However, Idil Abdit and Abbi Pearce showed aggression and determination in scoring two unconverted tries.
It ended a very respectable score of England Deaf 19 Derby Barbarians 10.
With Derby men unable to raise sufficient players, it was left to Mansfield to step up to the mark. They field a team, which included several young Colts. Though outpowered, they kept trying right to the end. Well done, Mansfield.
The final score was England Deaf 71 Mansfield 26.
