Derby started the new league season with an away fixture at Banbury. Derby gave debuts to Archie Murdoch in the centre and Andrew Harriott in the back row, in a youthful and inexperienced looking squad; 5 of the matchday squad had 6 appearances between them before the game started! Everyone has to start somewhere!
Jack Bates led the team out in recognition of his 100th appearance.
Banbury exploded out of the blocks and after 12 minutes were 3 tries to the good.
Only 21 minutes had elapsed when they secured the bonus point try.
By halftime the Derby try line had been breached 6 times, with 4 conversions making the half-time score 38 – 0 to the hosts.
The 2nd half started in similar vein, with 2 tries in the first 10 minutes.
Derby then got a foothold in the game and put some phases together which ended with Simon Moon being held up over the line.
After 67 minutes, Derby were pressing again and Will Town forced his way over from close range, to score his 25th try in 34 appearances. Josh Bingham added the conversion.
Banbury finished the game with 3 further tries in injury time.
It goes without saying that Banbury thoroughly deserved their win but it was a chastening day for Derby.
They have a chance to bounce back with a home game against Syston next Saturday.
Come on Derby!
